The Sequential Oral Sensory Approach: A Path to Successful Feeding Therapy

Feeding issues can be a common challenge for many children, particularly those with sensory processing difficulties or developmental delays. One therapeutic method that has been found to be effective in supporting sensory feeding therapy is the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach. This approach focuses on building a child’s confidence and comfort around food through a structured, yet individualized method.

The SOS Approach is based on the principle that feeding is a developmental process that involves multiple senses. This method considers the sensory, motor, and behavioral aspects of feeding, addressing each area to build a positive relationship with food.

Key Features of the SOS Approach:

  1. Desensitization: The child is slowly exposed to various foods using the steps to eating. These include tolerating, looking, smelling, touching, tasting, and eating—with many smaller steps in between!
  2. Play-Based Learning: The process incorporates playful activities to reduce anxiety, making food exploration feel fun rather than stressful.
  3. Gradual Progression: Children move through different levels of food interaction at their own pace, ensuring that each small success builds confidence.
  4. Family-Centered: The SOS Approach encourages family involvement, teaching parents how to support their child in a way that is encouraging and positive. Having the parent at the table with the therapist and child is essential for learning and generalization.

One of the main goals of the SOS Approach is to build joy around food and help to create a trusting relationship to support learning and regulation. This approach will help children become comfortable with a wide variety of foods, expand their food repertoire, and reduce mealtime stress. It's a compassionate, non-invasive method that empowers both children and families on their journey to healthier eating habits.

For any child struggling with feeding difficulties, the SOS Approach can be an excellent first step toward creating a positive and enjoyable mealtime experience.
