Augmentative and Alternative Communication Therapy

Our goal is to decrease barriers and increase motivation for communication so that our clients can go beyond just basic wants and needs. Through caregiver and community training, as well as direct therapy, our aim is to help our clients expand their range of communicative functions. Our approach to AAC is customized to each client’s goals and skill level.

Parkwood’s approach to AAC includes (but is not limited to):

  • Evaluating the client’s needs and determining what AAC system would be the best fit
  • Submitting to insurance for coverage of high tech systems
  • Developing personalized treatment plans
  • Referring to other providers and resources as applicable
  • Expanding language skills through modeling of core vocabulary
  • Training siblings, caregivers and teachers on how to encourage AAC system use within established routines
  • Maintaining working relationships with local AAC representatives to strengthen family and community AAC knowledge
  • Connecting with community partners to enhance financial and informational resources for families of AAC system users
  • Providing opportunities for families of AAC system users to interact and gain support from one another.
